Neat MSC chat going on right now

Posted by gweiss, Mon Jan 28 12:19:00 UTC 2008

Very interesting (live) chat going on right now the Michigan Student Caucus: we're being joined by John Bracey, Executive Director of the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs; Karen Gagnon, Director of the Cool Cities Initiative; and--I love this!--a new program associate from Cool Cities, Ashley Aidenbaum ... who holds the important distinction of having been the first (and to this day only) president of MSC, way way back in its first session when it was the Michigan Youth Caucus. Very cool! Two other interesting chats this week, both focusing on education: at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, January 29, we'll be joined by Susanne Chandler, Dean of the School of Education and Human Services here at UM-Flint, and Linda Thompson, Superintendent of Flint Communty Schools. Then on Thursday, we'll be joined by MaryAlice Galloway of the Michigan Department of Education. You can join the MSC, then login to join us if you'd like ...!

Chat with John Czarnecki of MEDC

Posted by gweiss, Wed Feb 14 12:07:00 UTC 2007

Very interesting chat this morning on the MSC site with John Czarnecki of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. (Login required.) Snip:

MEDC is trying to go after "high tech companies," life science industries, renewable energy ... we have programs, like the 21st century fund, that's targeted to those kind of industries. But everyone has to understand that every state in the country are going after the same firms--those are the growth industries for the 21st century. Our biggest problem is still the cutbacks in the auto industry. We're holding our own in other sectors, but we're reading more and more about the cuts GM is making, Ford is making ... and that goes down to their suppliers. If they could have the market share they had 15 years ago we'd be in great shape. But we cannot attract enough jobs from other industries to make up for those losses.

FYI, tomorrow at 7:00 PM is a chat with Susanne Chandler, Dean of the School of Education and Human Services at UM-Flint to talk about issues in Michigan's educational system.

A few upcoming chats on the MSC site (yes, Virginia, we think we’ve fixed the problems):

February 9th at 2:00 PM, Karen Gagnon, Director of the Cool Cities Collaborative. Also joining us will be Doug Hart, founder of the MSC.

February 14th at 11:00 AM, John Czarnecki, MEDC. What could be more romantic that discussing economic development on Valentine’s Day?
